The Real Superman and The Real Human Torch

March 1, 2018

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.  (Matthew 5:14-16 NIV)

Over the last several years there have been a number of ‘super heroes’ who have emerged from the classic comic books of my childhood to the big screen of multiplex movie theaters.  As I’m writing this, the Disney/Marvel Comics’ movie feature, The Black Panther, is setting box office records, as throngs of young folks are being introduced to this African super man, who many of us Baby Boomers first met way back in 1966 when we grabbed our flashlights and comic books, and read under our bedroom covers when we were supposed to be sleeping.  It seems like there have been dozens of Superman movies and TV shows since I first cracked open my DC comics, followed closely by the original ‘Dynamic Duo,’ Batman & Robin.  Spiderman, Iron Man, Aquaman, The Flash, The Mighty Thor and of course every little boy’s first crush, Wonder Woman, are just a few of those ‘crime fighters,’ (with crime ranging from petty theft to destroying planet Earth) both young and old are now enjoying.  (I wonder if little boys are still snitching their mother’s towels and safety pins in order to don their Superman capes, ‘flying’ out the front door to save the world…as long as they’re were back by dinner.)

As I was reading my Bible (admittedly as my mind wandered), I thought about how God has orchestrated a divinely derived different Dynamic Duo – The Real Superman and The Real Human Torch. (For those of you not familiar with the latter, The Human Torch is one of Marvel Comics, The Fantastic Four.)  This real combination, on the surface seems just as jaw dropping.  The Real Superman is of course our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who was sent to earth from the distant Kingdom, we know as Heaven, to save the world.  The Real Human Torch is the most unlikely of super hero sidekicks, especially since everyone knows Superman doesn’t need a sidekick.  The Real Human Torch is you, and me, and anyone who puts their faith and trust in Jesus.  The Real Human Torch has been empowered by the Holy Spirit to help save the world by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ: to not only carry the light, but to be the light.  Jesus said to His followers, "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16 NIV).

As followers (and sidekicks) of Christ, our job is to be the Light of Christ, a human torch, in a world that has fallen into darkness. Another ‘sidekick,’ the Apostle Paul wrote, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them (Ephesians 5:8-11NIV).”  We should never underestimate the power God has granted us to do what is good, what is right and what is true.  To snatch a quote from The Amazing Spiderman, “With great power, there must also come great responsibility.”  The greatest power God has given us is love.  Now, it is our responsibility to go out and share the love and truth of God’s grace, and the ultimate sacrifice of The Real Superman, Who can save the world.  God bless.
