The Great Unifier

The Great Unifier

Last November, on the cusp of the Election, I wrote a blog titled The Great Divide in which I lamented about the number of “Christians airing their dirty laundry of negative chatter out there for the whole world to see.” I observed, “Is it any wonder that recent Barna research reports that up to 70% of non-church going folks see Christians as insensitive to any issue that doesn’t align with our own political agenda.” I concluded that the only solution was prophesied thousands of years ago when the Lord, our God appeared to Solomon and let him know that if the people are to be forgiven and their country restored, there needs to be full out humility and a sincere desire to change direction from the path they’ve been walking. I recalled God’s promise, that “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV)

Fast forward two months and over two thousand years. The great political divide in our country has continued to snowball and effectively divide not only our country, but our churches as well. Instead of defending our personal views with love or compelling, sensitive and sensible rhetoric, many Christians continue to spew anger, hatred, sarcasm and/or inflict curt little digs in an attempt to ridicule the people and opinions they disagree with – resulting in their opposition only digging their heels in deeper, and thus aiding and abetting the very causes, acts and individuals they find so reprehensible.

Instead of unifying in Christian love, and testifying that the ‘only hope’ is Jesus Christ, many Christian women are unifying with non-believers, marching beside those endorsing violence, the taking of innocent life, and publicly hoisting signs with profanity laced rhetoric, and crude vulgar sexual references to their own bodies - descriptions of the female anatomy that God ordained as “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Worse, Christian men and women are (at least subconsciously) siding with hate groups who would love nothing more than to regress to a country of segregated races and religions. (Note: It’s tough to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with folks you’re ‘not’ in contact with) Many well-intentioned Christians are being manipulated by very powerful political and media machines and an even more powerful force of evil.

Over two thousand years ago, the Jesus Christ of “yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8) observed that “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand” (Mark 3:25 NIV). Christians should certainly ‘stand’ for what they believe in, but history has continually shown that the most effective, lasting, life changing reform has come from non-violence and love. I doubt seriously if most of those Christians marching, posting, tweeting, spewing and siding with non-believers began their acts with ACTS - boldly encouraging their faithless friends that the first step should be one of Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The greatest divide is not our polar opposite political opinions. The greatest divide is the one that separates humanity from eternity with God and therefore the greatest unifier is not an act, ideology or politically connected power broker or celebrity. The Greatest Unifier is the only One who can bridge the great divide between an eternal Heaven and a temporary earth. The Great Unifier is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Now that’s a sign worth hoisting.

“…But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15 NKJV)
